(RV-1909) Reina-Valera

The Reina-Valera line begins with Casiodoro de Reina. His Bible, called the Biblia del Oso, was printed in Basel in 1569 and was the first complete Bible in Spanish made from Hebrew and Greek.

Cipriano de Valera revised that text. The revision appeared in Amsterdam in 1602 and became the usual Protestant Bible in Spanish.

In the following centuries the Bible societies published further revisions, because the Spanish of 1602 had grown old.

The 1909 revision was published with the British and Foreign Bible Society. It modernized the spelling and the language without replacing the translation with another.

It was the most widely read Reina-Valera in the Spanish-speaking world until the 1960 revision took that place.

The 1909 text is in the public domain. The Digital Bible Society republishes that edition as a free text.

It is not the 1960 Reina-Valera, nor the 1995. Those later revisions have their own publishers and licences.

In Spain the usual abbreviations for these books are Mr for Mark and Lc for Luke. The Spanish menu on this site follows that convention.
